Welcome to the Parish of Combe St. Nicholas and
the church. It has probably been a place of Christian worship since
the 10th century. A Norman church was built in the 12th century and this
was replaced in the 13th century. In the middle of the 15th century the
church
was enlarged and partly rebuilt. Apart from some additions
in Victorian times, it remains largely unchanged to this day.
A
number of repairs and minor changes have taken place over the last few
years. These have included the provision of a toilet block next to the
school; repairs to the bell tower; the removal of the front two
rows of pews, filling of the aisle and carpeting. This has
provided an excellent performance space with mainly free concerts
being held throughout the year.
Our Vicar the Rev. Phil Regan
retired at the end of March.
Phil
was also responsible for two other parishes, Wambrook and
Whitestaunton, also for the “church
in the field”, Ham Church.
Until a new Vicar is appointed responsibility
for the management of the Church rests with the
Lay Reader and churchwarden, Greg Hoare
(01460 68799), and the other churchwarden, Mrs. C. Liney
(63287) together with the
Parochial Church Council. The PCC has the responsibility of
finding the funds to run the Church and also contribute towards
the running of the Diocese.
The
Parish Council provides financial assistance towards the cost of
maintaining the churchyard.
Music
for services is provided by volunteer organists.
Services are supported by a mixed adult choir. The church bells
are rung for some services and for weddings. There is an active
group of bellringers.
