End of Year
Report 2011
There have
been some disappointments this year, particularly with pests
such as carrot fly, but overall I think it's been another
good growing year.
Grass-cutting
this year suffered a hiccup when our mower began to show
signs of age and can now only be used for light work. We
have since managed to obtain a newer mower at reasonable
cost and may purchase another so the original one can be
taken out of service. Two mowers also means the work gets
done quicker.
We have lost
a few plot holders along the way for various reasons. We are
now full again and still have a small waiting list.
Sadly, one of
our plot holders, Brian Poynter, died in September. He was a
very nice man and a real character and will be sorely
missed.
Composition
of the committee has been stable over the last year. I would
like to thank the committee members all for the work they
have carried out on and for the site. In particular I would
like to thank Kay for her tireless work on the financial
side, ensuring that we have sufficient funds to meet our
ongoing financial obligations. I am pleased to report that
all committee members have offered themselves for
re-election at this meeting.
I look
forward to another excellent growing season next year.

As I write
these words in December, it would have been difficult to
imagine this time last year how well the allotment site
would turn out. We did not get access to the land until the
beginning of February and our initial activities of marking
out plots, stripping turf and erecting sheds coincided with
a particularly wet period. I am sure we all remember the mud
and piles of earth. Looking back now, it seems unreal. We
have had an excellent growing season, helped by long periods
of dry weather.
We have
managed, at low cost, to have another water tank installed,
lay mesh for the parking area and purchase a mower to cut
the grass. The latter task has not always been easy but we
have achieved it with a group of regular helpers.
We have lost
a few plot holders along the way but not for any reasons
connected with the allotments. We have been fortunate to
replace them and are now in a position where we have a small
waiting list. Encouragingly most of those waiting are
already plot holders wishing for more growing space!
I would like
to thank everyone for their help, support and patience this
year. Setting up and running an allotment site has been a
new experience for all of us, not just committee members.
In particular I
would like to thank Kay for her tireless work on the
financial side, ensuring that we had sufficient funds to get
us off the ground and meet ongoing financial obligations.
In recent
weeks we have seen the site covered with snow and heavy
frost, creating a beautiful picture. Nevertheless, most of
us still have crops growing and have been harvesting
parsnips, leeks and brussel sprouts. It bodes well for
Christmas lunch! It just goes to show than, with careful
planning, an allotment can be used for much of the year, not
just the summer
We are all
looking forward to another excellent growing season next
year.
If you are
interested in going on our waiting list, please let me know.
