Combe St. Nicholas Short Mat Bowls Club

The Club meets at Combe St Nicholas Village Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm, and Friday afternoons at 2.00pm. The sessions last for at least 2.5 hours. The hall is large enough to accommodate two bowling mats. The annual subscription has been maintained at £10.00, with each bowling session (green fees) costing £1.50 per person. The club is affiliated to the Somerset Short Mat Bowling Association.

The AGM finally took place on Friday February 25th, 2011, having been postponed originally, due to bad weather. Following a welcome from the Chairman, the previous minutes were agreed, and signed. 2010 had been a good club year, and whilst trophies and cups had not been to the fore, all members had enjoyed their bowls. Currently our team in the East Devon League is lying mid table, with a game in hand over those above us.

The Treasurer reported a satisfactory financial position, and proposed that the annual subscription of £10.00 and green fees of £1.50 per member, per session, should remain; to be reviewed later in the year, in the light of increased Hall hiring fees. It was agreed to assist the Village Hall Committee in their efforts to revamp the Hall kitchen. This will be considered again when we know the best way in which we can help.

All the existing Officers agreed to stand again, and were re-elected en bloc.

After the success of the last outing, consideration will be given to repeat the venture again this year.

There was no further business to discuss, so the Chairman closed the meeting, after which members enjoyed an afternoon’s bowling.

Officers are:

Chairman: Gill Coleman

Vice Chairman/Match Secretary: Bill Gay

Secretary: Sheila Saunders

Treasurer: Harry Platt

Village Hall representative: Alan Johnson

LATEST NEWS

On September 16th 2011 the Club celebrated the 20th year of its existence. Present and past members met at the village hall to enjoy an excellent afternoon buffet, and a lot of reminiscing. The furthest travelled of the past members, Jean Comber, came from London to meet old friends. The Club’s first Chairman, Pam Martin, gave a brief address, followed by words from Reg Graham, a Club Vice President. Pam and Reg cut a grand celebration cake, wishing the Club well for the future.

Various cups and trophies won by Club members were on display, together with newspaper cuttings and photographs, tracking the 20 years of the Club.

A great amount of work went into organising the afternoon. Thanks must go to the Club committee, and especially to Chairman Gill Coleman and Secretary Sheila Saunders, who ensured everyone enjoyed the event.

The next twenty years has been started with the Club entering a team in the East Devon Afternoon League. The first match will be away against Musbury. We wish the team well.
